Welcome to the new Chair of Northumberland County Blind Association

15th September 2011

I’m delighted to have been elected as the new Chair of the Northumberland County Blind Association. I’m a relatively new member of the Board, joining in February 2011, so I’d like to introduce myself to you.

I was born and bred in Northumberland and have lived in Morpeth for the past 30 years. I’ve spent a lot of my professional career in the public sector working in a variety of business areas including social housing, care & support, IT, and public transport. My expertise includes project & programme management, risk management, business development and process improvement.
I’ve just finished a two year spell as the Mayor of Morpeth. During my time as the Mayor I enjoyed a good working relationship with NCBA and named the organisation as one of my chosen charities in my second year of office, resulting in a donation to NCBA of almost £1,000. I also nominated NCBA for the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

Both of these initiatives have, I hope, helped to raise the profile of NCBA. I believe that I can bring some fresh ideas that will continue to raise awareness of the organisation and attract additional funding, and I will endeavour to develop these ideas in the coming months.

I am confident that the organisation is robust and viable and I am very much looking forward to working with the Board, the Chief Executive and her team, and an increased membership so that we can together ensure that NCBA goes from strength to strength.

Long standing Board Member Ian Steele has been appointed to Vice Chair.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to anyone wishing to join us.

We meet on the third Tuesday of each month (except January and February) 10.30am to 12.30pm at Reiver House.

Our programme is very varied with speakers, comedy acts, singers, craft sessions, skin care sessions, flower arranging tips and much more.  We end our year with a Christmas buffet and entertainment.

10th Anniversary Angling Competition

15th September 2011

We celebrated a decade of fishing at Fontburn on Friday 29 July with our best ever competition.  £1625 was raised from entry and raffle ticket sales with all profit going directly to help support blind and partially sighted people.  Special thanks to Don Coe and his team at Northumbrian Water, Fontburn, who as always, gave their time and prize contributions freely on the day.  They made this year even more special by presenting a ‘Golden Ticket’ prize of a 2012 Northumbrian Water Explorer season ticket (value £799) which was won by  William Graham (13) of Bormasund.  The prize raffle was very popular and our appreciation goes to the following local businesses who donated prizes: Green Agriculture, Robson & Cowan, Morrisons, BIN21, The Pen Shop, Gormans Fish and Chips, and T & G Allan.

NCBA Street Collection

15th September 2011

Many thanks to volunteers, clients and friends who helped raise the grand sum of £800.52 during the street collection in Morpeth on Wednesday 17th August.  Sanderson Arcade kindly let us use one of their barrows and funds were boosted by the sale of crafts generously donated by Cramlington Craft Club.
